Women Matter

Today is dedicated to women all around the world of all ethnicities and of all backgrounds. Today we thank all those women that have fought and keep fighting for equal rights. Today, we also remind ourselves that the majority of people living in poverty are women. That women tend to have fewer resources and opportunities and that women have fewer rights.

Violence against women is still a global crisis, as more than a billion women worldwide will experience a form of violence in their lifetime. Women’s rights to own land are also under attack. Despite the fact that women are usually responsible for taking care of their families, they are often denied access to land and potential incomes. Women are also underrepresented in decision-making positions. Indeed, in 2016 only 22% of all national parliamentarians were female. Sexual and reproductive health and rights are still under attack. Women often lack safe and legal access to abortion, this is also accompanied by a lack family planning services.

So let’s take a moment today to think about all that has been accomplished and what more must be done to ensure equality and prosperity for all.

As Malala Yousafzai said: “we cannot all succeed when half of us are held back”
